By Ji-Li Jiang
A Summary by Holt
Twelve-year-old Ji-li Jiang lives with her loving family in Shanghai, China. She is a successful student who believes that all her dreams can come true—until the Cultural Revolution begins in 1966. Suddenly everything changes. Chairman Mao, the leader of China, encourages everyone to destroy the Four Olds: old ideas, old culture, old customs, and old habits. Before long, schools are declared corrupt, classes are suspended, and students begin to denounce one another.
Will Ji-li be able to achieve her goals? Or will the Cultural Revolution destroy her dreams for the future? |
