Express Yourself Through Art and Writing
Project for Core LA
Assignment
To prepare for your interdisciplinary studies in language arts and social studies, and introduce yourself to the class, design a creative piece telling the class and me all about whom you are. We are going to be spending a lot of time together in our language arts class, and studying many cultures in our novels and in social studies, so this is a nice way to gt to know each other and learn a little about your heritage. This will be a presentation that includes the artistic project and some writing that relates to the questions below under "Planning and Key Questions"

Planning and Key Questions
Think about interesting facts about yourself, things that make you YOU--important things, quirky things, special things, funny things, weird things, whatever you want to share with the class. Also, think about how you can illustrate or creatively show these things about yourself.
In your written portion, you must include answers to all of the following questions:
1. Who makes up your family?
2. What is your cultural heritage?
3. Where does your name come from -- why were you named ___________?
4. What are your passions, favorite activities, and/or interests?
5. What holiday traditions and food does your family participate in? Do these come from your ancestry or another tradition?
6. If you could live anywhere, where would you live and why?
7. Who or what has had the biggest influence on who you are today? Why?
8. If you could invite anyone to dinner (from the past, present, or future), who would you invite and why?
9. Extra challenge: Describe yourself using an extended metaphor. (Not extra credit, but it can't hurt and could be fun!)
Helpful hint: You might need to ask your parents to help you with some of these (for example, you might not know why they chose your name).
